La Escuelita
We believe that education is the key to obtaining good employment and breaking the cycle of generational poverty.
Back in 2008, when we first began working in the Madre Selva/Gardenia communities, very few children were registered in pubblic school (grades 1-6) and their attendance was spotty. There were no children registered in kindergarden, middle or high schools.
There were few a reasons for this: families couldn’t afford mandatory school costs; children were unwell or malnourished; children were required to work to help with family income; or parents were uneducated and didn’t understand the importance of education. Over the years, we have focused on addressing each of these barriers to education.
School costs are often overwhelming for families in the communities we serve. Removing financial barriers allows all children the oportunity to attend public school. As needed, New Beginnings provides funds for registration fees, school supplies, and uniforms. For example in 2023, New Beginnings assisted 130 students register for school. Costs average $100.00 per student. By supporting the families in need , we have seen school atttendance grow. All children now attend kinder garden, primary, and most attend middle school while some are in high school through sponsorships and a few have continued on to University. In 2022, the Madre Selva community clebrated their first University graduate. This is exciting!
Through sponsorships, New Beginnings also provides education support to adults by asisiting them to enroll in programs to obtain an education certificate or to learn new occupational skills. Through sponsorships and support, Hector and Marbella have completed Nursing studies, and are now working in the nursing field.
